Music Therapy Symposium - “Singing Together: Celebrating Music Therapy and Musical Partnerships”

Tuesday 24th May, 1.00-5.00pm

The University of Auckland Tāmaki Innovation Campus

Professor Suzanne Purdy (Head of Speech Science) and Registered Music Therapists Alison Talmage and Shari Storie warmly invite you to this Music Therapy Symposium at the University of Auckland’s Centre for Brain Research https://www.fmhs.auckland.ac.nz/en/faculty/cbr.html). The event is part of New Zealand’s inaugural Music Therapy Week (May 21-29) and is supported by Music Therapy NZ (www.musictherapy.org.nz).

The symposium is aimed at a mixed audience of clinicians, researchers, students and the public. It may be of interest to senior students interested in professional music therapy or researching aspects of music therapy for NCEA.

Presentations will relate to music therapy, singing, and voice, speech and language development/rehabilitation, for both adults and children. Confirmed guest presenters include: Dr Te Oti Rakena (The University of Auckland); Jen Rykaert RMTh and Fiona Kenworthy SLT (Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre); Robin Matthews (SLT and PhD candidate, Tauranga); Kim Wade RMTh (Christchurch), Min-Min Cheung RMTh (Auckland), and the Music Moves Me Trust (Waikato). There will be a short performance by the CeleBRation Choir, a singing group for people living with neurological conditions, such as stroke or Parkinson’s disease. A new book Arts Therapists in Multidisciplinary Settings (which includes five music therapy chapters) will be launched by editor, psychologist and dramatherapist Caroline Miller.
