  • 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
  • Charles Luney Auditorium, 12 Winchester Street, Christchurch

"Tom Woods, chief conductor emeritus.

Ashley Brown, cello.

Helen Webby, harp.

Debussy Sacred and Profane Dances.

Gulda Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra.

Grieg Peer Gynt Suites 1 and 2.

Telling the adventures of the Norwegian folk anti-hero, Peer Gynt, Grieg's music captures the magic of the fairy tale characters from the ominous, frenzied "Hall of the Mountain King" to the lyrical beauty of "Solveig's Song".

Evoking an atmosphere of ancient religiosity, Debussy's Sacred and Profane Dances contrast the opening mood of spiritual contemplation with an earthy dance infused with Spanish character.

Gulda's Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra was commissioned and premiered by Heinrich Schiff in 1981 and was described by critics as 'a knock-out'. It features swinging big band riffs, melodious folk tunes, classical gestures and virtuostic cadenza passages.

Performing this tour de force, cellist Ashley Brown joins the CSO for the New Zealand premiere of this concerto."
